Any advice to keep customer contracts legally binding and avoid unpaid invoices?

Had another client go silent after delivering my work. Frustrating, right?

I’ve been using contracts, but I can’t shake the feeling they’re not doing their job. What else should I be considering to make these agreements stick?

Had the same issue until I stopped thinking of contracts as just legal protection and started using them as business tools.

Biggest game-changer: I added a clause where they don’t own the work until they pay in full. Client ghosts me? They can’t use what I delivered. Had someone crawl back two months later begging for files after ignoring my calls.

I also ask new clients for references from other vendors. Takes five minutes and you’d be shocked what you find out. One potential client’s web designer tipped me off they were three months behind on payments.

Switched to 15-day payment terms instead of 30. People move faster and can’t pull the “I forgot” excuse as easily.

Still happens, but way less now.

Contracts are good but payment upfront helps more.

Silent clients are the worst. Been there too many times.

Here’s what actually works:

  • Invoice immediately when work’s done, not weeks later
  • Follow up every 7 days after due date
  • Put late fees in your contract and actually use them
  • Get everything written down before starting

Be persistent but don’t be annoying. Most clients pay if you keep at them.

Also, ask for 50% upfront on bigger projects. Weeds out the flaky ones fast.

Stop work the moment payment’s late. That’s what actually works, not contract language.

I ate too many unpaid invoices early on. Now I send one reminder at 30 days overdue. No response within a week? Work stops until they pay.

Put the work stoppage terms right in your contract. Clients magically find their checkbook when work stops.

Consider making your contracts clearer about payment terms. Ensure the client knows what happens if they don’t pay. I ask for a deposit before starting work. It helps secure commitment from clients.

No contract guarantees payment. Clear communication and follow-ups help, but clients can still vanish.
