Recently lost a potential client when I mentioned a deposit. They ghosted me after that. It’s frustrating because I need some financial security, but I don’t want to come across as pushy or desperate.
Wonder how others handle this delicate balance. What’s your approach to deposits?
Deposits are non-negotiable in my business. It’s how I know a client is serious. I tell them straight up: ‘30% deposit starts the project.’ No fancy explanations needed.
If they walk away, so be it. Plenty of other fish in the sea. Those who pay deposits tend to be better clients anyway. Less likely to mess you around or not pay at the end.
One tip: give them options. Full payment upfront with a 5% discount, or 30% deposit to start. Some like the discount, others prefer installments. Either way, you’re covered.
I’ve been there. Lost a few clients early on when asking for deposits. Now it’s just part of how I do business.
I explain it as a way to reserve my time and start the project. Usually 25-30% upfront works well. Most clients get it.
If someone ghosts over a deposit, they might’ve been trouble later anyway. Had a guy refuse once, then tried to change the whole project midway. Dodged a bullet there.
Don’t feel bad about asking. It’s normal in lots of industries. Just be upfront about it from the start.
One trick: offer a small discount if they pay the full amount upfront. Some clients love that option.
