It's wild how big companies with millions in revenue can take 60 or 90 days to pay a small freelancer. You know they have the money. It's the process that's broken.

Just finished a project for a major corporation last month. Everything was approved, invoice sent right away. Now, I’m just waiting as it goes through multiple approvals.

It’s frustrating trying to manage my expenses with what’s left in my account. They likely spend more in their break rooms than what they owe me. Such a twisted system.

Had a client whose accounting department swore their check was “in the system” for three months. Turns out it sat on someone’s desk because they needed a signature from someone on vacation.

Now I call their AP department weekly after 45 days. Nothing rude - just checking in. The squeaky wheel thing works with big companies since most vendors don’t follow up.

I also send invoices to multiple people now. Hit up your project contact AND accounting at the same time. Kills those “we never got it” excuses.

Big companies pull this to hold onto cash and earn interest. I started charging late fees after 30 days and asking for deposits upfront from corporate clients. Amazing how fast they pay when there’s actual consequences.

I just ask for half up front now. Learned that lesson the hard way too many times.

The whole thing’s rigged because they built these systems for them, not us. Here’s what I’ve seen:

  • They budget for late payments - it’s literally part of their cash flow strategy
  • Multiple approval layers create built-in delays
  • Their accounts payable runs on their timeline, not ours

I’ve gotten more direct about payment terms upfront now. Net 15 instead of 30, and I explain why before starting work. Got some pushback initially, but most don’t care once they see the work quality.

Doesn’t fix the real problem though. They know most freelancers can’t afford to walk away or sue over a few thousand bucks.
