Tips to build credit as a self-employed contractor?

Been freelancing for a few years now, but my credit score is still stuck in the 600s. Not sure if it’s because of irregular income or what. Anyone else struggled with this?

Thinking about applying for a business credit card, but worried I’ll get denied. Curious how other solo contractors have managed to boost their credit over time.

Credit’s not rocket science. Pay your bills on time, that’s the main thing. Secured card’s a good bet if you’re worried about approval. I got one years back, helped build my score.

Don’t sweat the business card right away. Personal cards work fine to start. Just use it for business expenses, pay it off each month. Shows you can handle credit responsibly.

Keep your utilization low, like 30% or less of your limit. And make sure clients pay you on time so you can pay your bills. That’s really all there is to it.

Credit’s a pain when you’re self-employed. I just pay my bills on time and hope for the best. Don’t overthink it. Maybe try a secured card if you’re worried about getting approved.

Been down that road. Credit’s tricky when you’re solo.

Few things that worked for me:

  1. Steady payments. Set up auto-pay for bills.
  2. Mix of credit. Started with a basic card, added a small loan later.
  3. Keep utilization low. Use the card, but don’t max it out.

Business card? Not worth the stress early on. Regular card works fine for work expenses.

Cash flow’s key. I started putting aside a bit from each project. Helps smooth out the income bumps.

Takes time, but it adds up. Just keep at it and watch those numbers climb.

Just pay what you owe when you can. Didn’t bother with fancy cards or anything. My score’s okay I guess.

I’ve been there with the credit struggle. What worked for me was getting a basic credit card and using it for business expenses. Nothing fancy, just a regular card from my bank.

I put all my work stuff on it - supplies, software, that kind of thing. Then I’d pay it off in full each month. Showed I could handle credit even with irregular income.

One thing that helped was setting aside money from each project for taxes and credit card payments. That way I always had cash to pay the bill, even in slow months.

It took time, but my score went up. Now I use a mix of personal and business cards. Just make sure you can pay them off reliably before applying for anything new.

The key is really staying on top of payments. Set reminders if you need to. It’s a pain, but it pays off in the long run.

I’ve been there. Consistent, on-time payments are key.

I use a secured credit card and keep utilization low. It’s easier to get approved for.

Also, I make sure my invoices get paid on time. Good cash flow helps me pay bills regularly, which boosts my score over time.

Business credit cards can work, but personal cards are often easier to get started with.
