Using contracts to prevent unpaid invoices can make a huge difference

After a couple of bad experiences with clients who disappeared, I began insisting on signed contracts for every project.

By outlining payment terms, late fees, and the project scope, I haven’t had an unpaid invoice since. It’s a simple change that pays off big time.

Yeah, contracts definitely work. I learned this the hard way too.

What really sealed the deal for me was adding a kill fee clause. Even if they cancel halfway through, I still get paid for the work done.

These days I also include:

  • Payment timeline (usually NET 15)
  • What happens if they go over scope
  • Who owns the work if payment stops

The clients who push back on signing? Those are usually the ones who would have caused problems later anyway.

Never bothered with contracts but maybe I should start

Contracts help a lot. I also ask for half payment upfront.

This way, if a client tries to back out, I have some security. The contract ensures they take the agreement seriously since it’s all clear and documented.
